2023 Winter Anime Season

7 minute read

These are the series I watched (or at least started) and my impressions. They’re more or less ordered from most enjoyable to least. I added my scores to each title (on a scale of 1 to 5). Spoilers alert, etc.

The Way of the Househusband 2

  • Score: 5
  • 日本語: “Gokushufudou 2”

This is nice wholesome entertainment. The first season was better (of course), but this is still excellent. I love the juxtaposition of Yakuza in trivial, everyday situations. It’s the absurdity of it all, combined with the absolute seriousness with which they handle each situation

Vinland Saga Season 2

  • Score: 5

The first season portrays a band of warriors traveling through a war-torn country. The second season is the opposite - Thorfin is a war-scarred and traumatized slave working under idyllic (for the times) conditions. I like how they portray Einar’s friendship with Thorfin - that seems to be something that seems to have become marginalized over the last century. I also very much appreciate the attention paid to details and historical accuracy. Of course it’s far from perfect, but for an anime, or even for fiction in general, it’s way ahead of most representations of Vikings.

Attack on Titan - Final season episode 3012130412

  • Score: 4.5
  • 日本語: “Shingeki no Kyojin”

I get the impression that this is a show that’s become too good for itself… Your average show has to fit into the basic schedule of 3 months of 12 episodes, maybe plus a bonus 13th one. AoT seems to go by its own rules. A single 1h episode? Really?

The recent episodes tend to have lost the suspense of the early ones. The first couple of seasons were like lost when it started coming out - no one had any idea of what was happening, whenever someone came up with a plan to better humanities situation it would turn out that just before the plan succeeded, something even worse would happen.

Then the paradise islanders reached the sea, and the roles were reversed. It seems like the geopolitics part is weaker than the initial bloodbath part. I like philosophical/social issues, but they seem a bit chaotic, or simplified here.

Overall a good episode, but I’d give it 4.5/5 rather than the 5/5 that I’d give the first series.

Aggretsuko 5

  • Score: 4.5

I like how Aggretsuko shows various living styles and the downsides of each. While I don’t know much about it (which pretty much disqualifies the rest of this sentence), but I liked how they treated Haida’s homelessness, part timer status, etc. I also found the depiction of the political process strangely compelling.

Chillin’ in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army

  • Score: 4.5
  • 日本語: “Kaikosareta Ankoku Heishi (30-dai) no Slow na Second Life”

This is a story of an overpowered main character who totally deserves his overpowerness. Especially as he solves most problems without really having to use his OPness. I’m glad that this season’s Isekai stuff seem to be focusing more on the social/economical side of things, rather than the fighting bits. It’s always nice to see a competent person depicted, especially when they actually earn their reputation.

It’s a very much enemies to friends story, but even so, it’s done very well, with the enemies either already predisposed to be friendly (but just needing the appropriate reasons), or once defeated, they disappear from the story.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

  • Score: 4.5
  • 日本語: “Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei”

A well done romance. Subtle, but it also explicitly says what it’s doing, which I appreciate. It’s a decent exploration of the issues surrounding duty, obligations and freedon.

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement

  • Score: 4.5
  • 日本語: “Rougo ni Sonaete Isekai de 8-Man-Mai no Kinka wo Tamemasu”

Isekai where the protagonist makes use of their knowledge, not just the overpowered skills they’re granted. I’d suggest a lot of improvements etc. if I was in her place, but I’m glad to see that someone has actually spent 5 minutes considering the implications of appearing in a medieval style world. I’m glad to see that there are more and more isekais that consider the economical and social issues stemming from someone with modern knowledge appearing, rather than just giving them a magic sword and having them go off on adventures.

Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire ♀

  • Score: 4
  • 日本語: “Eiyuu Ou, Bu wo Kiwameru Tame Tenseisu: Soshite, Sekai Saikyou no Minarai Kishi ♀”

Another overpowered main character. But this one sort of makes sense? And isn’t overly overpowered (though she really is…). It’s nice that they didn’t seem to take themselves too seriously.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten

  • Score: 4
  • 日本語: “Otonari no Tenshi-sama ni Itsunomanika Dame Ningen ni Sareteita Ken”

A school romance that mainly takes place in a single room. Quite well done, too. I liked how they portrayed the inherent self-consciousness and low self esteem involved in being a teenager. It was also nice that the characters are well fleshed out. The animation was annoying at times, though - it was too cloying.

Handyman Saitou in another world

  • Score: 4
  • 日本語: “Benriya Saitou-san, Isekai ni Iku”

Another well done isekai. The titular Saitou’s only skills are those he learned through hard work as a handyman. So he fixes stuff, opens locks, navigates stuff etc. But because he’s so aware of his shortcomings, he works hard on being useful, ending up with various extra non obvious skills which turn out to be very useful. This gives the impression that it was originally a series of manga shorts or something, with each episode consisting of a couple of vignettes, rather than a continuous story. That being said, it all flows together into an overarching story.

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill

  • Score: 3.5
  • 日本語: “Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi”

A guy gets isekaied and his skill turns out to be buying stuff on amazon (or rather an equivalent of it). Which to be fair is an awesome skill, assuming the exchange rate is good. That being said, his skill is pretty much used exclusively for buying cooking stuff (utensils, tools, spices, etc.). Which is fine in context, but a lot less that I’d use it for. My general impression was that the creators wanted to do a cooking show, but were forced to do a fantasy world - a very large (like 30-50% maybe?) amount of the show is the main guy preparing, cooking, explaining and eating food. Which to be honest looked really tasty etc.

Farming Life in Another World

  • Score: 3.5
  • 日本語: “Isekai Nonbiri Nouka”

A fantasy fulfillment isekai. The main guy lives in the middle of nowhere with a magical tool that grants him super minecraft powers, where all kinds of busty and beautiful lasses join his homestead after he rescues them from the monsters roaming the forest. An extra bonus being that most of them want children. I was actually surprised by how little he considered polygamy, given how enthusiastic all other parties seemed to be.

REVENGER

  • Score: 3.5

A bunch of misfits that will take revenge for you if you bite a gold coin deep enough. All in all quite well done. The revengers had all kinds of creative ways of killing, which was interesting I suppose?

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense. 2

  • Score: 3.5
  • 日本語: “Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2”

I got through this one mainly by inertia. It’s not bad, but it’s pretty much the same thing over and over again.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy 2

  • Score: 3
  • 日本語: “Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha 2”

Another fantasy fulfillment with an overpowered main character, who is cool, composed and a massive chick magnet. I’m not sure I even finished it - at some point I stopped seeing more episodes (like after 6 or 7?) and couldn’t be bothered to check if that’s correct.

Trigun Stampede

I started this expecting to be disappointed, and wasn’t surprised. The 1998 version is one of my favorite anime, so this was handicapped from the start. Th be fair, I only watched the first episode, so maybe it gets better as it goes on? I wasn’t a fan of the CGI animation. I got the impression that they were trying to recreate the style of the 1998 version, which doesn’t work. Different animation techniques have different strengths - CGI doesn’t work well with OHSHC style visuals (as that is one of the best in its class when it comes to utilising its medium).
